Midwesterners are less likely than people from other regions to cheat on their partners, according to a new survey on dating and marriage that covers everything from prenuptial agreements to open relationships — and everything in between. The survey, sponsored by Avvo , an online attorney directory, asked 2, married and unmarried adults a series of questions about their relationship attitudes, in an attempt to understand some of the issues that typically send people in search of legal advice. That compares with 16 percent of all Northeasterners, 17 percent of Southerners and 20 percent of people who live in the West. If you’re around all people you know, if you’re still friends with the people you went to high school with, that makes a big difference. The Northeast and West have a lot of people coming and going — a lot of them looking to get rid of the obligations and traditions they grew up with. Forty-five percent of respondents said they “would not leave” or “might or might not leave” if their partner wanted to sleep with other people, while 55 percent of people said it would be a relationship deal breaker.

Subscriber Account active since. There’s only one place in the US where traffic jams are often caused by tractors on the road and weekends consist of floating down rivers and modeling clothes through the aisles of Walmart. Middle America has long been classified as a “flyover country,” comprised of more corn fields than major metropolises and mom-and-pop shops than Fortune companies, but the 12 states that constitute the Midwest have a richer culture than many people give it credit for — take it from me, a native of small-town Ohio myself.
In my hometown, “porch sitting” is a perfectly sound and popular pastime, the parking lot of our only supermarket is a common meeting place, and Friday nights out usually include a high school football game. The Daily Beast reported that lately, Millennials are kissing big city dreams goodbye to seek lower housing costs in cities like Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Indianapolis instead.
But while this influx of and somethings is proof that America’s “breadbasket” is undergoing significant change, some Midwest traditions are simply ingrained.
It would be a bold Midwesterner who, after reading the analyses written on the Eastern seaboard, persisted in considering the question still unanswered. From them he ought to know that “the people out there” are complacent. A Middle Westerner who demurred at the East’s interpretation would be even bolder to try to answer it on the basis of his own personal acquaintanceship.
The Midwest can be defined broadly as stretching from Western Pennsylvania to Colorado and from mid-Missouri to Canada. What kind of personal acquaintanceship can one have with a population nearly as large as that of Italy, in an area four times that of Weimar Germany, and possessing the most variously developed of all our regional economies? Moreover, the war is still in an early stage for the United States, and opinions are still in process of formation.
And finally if one has lived in the Midwest steadily enough since December 7 to have gotten the “feel” of it, he probably has lived there too long to possess any real basis for offering judgments of it in comparison with adventures in opinion in other parts of the country. The fact remains that the Midwest, for all its motley population, probably has a more nearly uniform Volksgeist than Hitler’s blue-eyed Germany. A Midwesterner who has shared the war experience with many persons in many groups and different strata can at least make an attempt at sensing what people throughout the region are thinking.
The most apparent thing is that they are thinking. Every kind of occasion is used for serious discussions — the meeting of a farm loan association, for example, or a district Rotary convention, or a reunion of the alumni of a small high school.

Many of these works will have an eco-focus that directly addresses the Midwestern landscape.

This was a useful approach. Students were very engaged with the course topic and they felt a strong sense of ownership for it, at least in my estimation. At least a few times during the semester, we would step back from the texts and take a wide-angle look at the question, putting our findings on the board to share and discuss. I taught the course in the spring semester, and the weather in Beloit was terrible through the first week and March.
We had one of the coldest Februaries on record, along with above-average snowfall.

I knew these were inadequate. Connecticut winters and Arizona summers are also “bad”; the vast majority of humans have worked hard, or been worked hard, for all of recorded history; and humility is one of those words, like authenticity or lately resistance, that serves mainly to advertise the absence of the thing named. I soon learned that I was hardly the only Midwesterner left tongue-tied by the Midwest. Articulate neighbors, friends, colleagues, and students, asked to describe their hometowns, replied with truisms that, put together, were also paradoxes: “Oh, it’s in the middle of nowhere.
